EARLY QUIT NEWSLETTER...
Vice President Jim O’Driscoll, opened our meeting with a moment of silence
for the safe return of our men and women serving our country overseas and
the passing of Andrew Wiedmayer. Our condolences go out to his family.

Reports: |
Business
manager, Marty Campbell, came to our meeting and gave a report on his meeting
in Washington with the international executive board. Marty explained
to them how our workload is balanced with the membership we have.
If we were to take in an additional 75 apprentices there would be members
unemployed. After the executive board meeting, Marty was informed
that Local 14 will have to increase its membership by 75. They understand
our position but we must comply with the new ruling. We thank you
Marty for all the time and effort you spent trying to keep things the way
they are. You spent a great deal of time seeing and talking to each
Vice President on the phone or in person. We all know how hard you
tried.
Mike
Burns attended our meeting with information for veterans about a program
called Aid and Attendance. The following is an overview of that program:
What
is Aid and Attendance?
Aid
and Attendance is an additional amount available to eligible veterans and
dependents who are entitled to VA pension or VA compensation.
Veterans
benefits – Aid and Attendance:
Aid
and Attendance is a non-service connected benefit available to veterans
or surviving spouses of veterans whose medical expenses exceed their income
and who need regular help with daily living activities. The veteran
must have served at least 90 days of active military service, with one
day of wartime service.
Introduction
to the Veterans’ Aid and Attendance special pension:
The
Veterans’ Administration offers a special pension with Aid and Attendance
benefit that is largely unknown. This special pension allows for
veterans and surviving spouses who require the regular attendance of another
person to assist in eating, bathing, dressing, undressing or taking care
of the needs of nature to receive additional monetary benefits. It
also includes individuals who are blind or in a nursing home because of
mental or physical incapacity. Assisted care in an assisted living
facility also qualifies.
The
most important benefit is overlooked by many families with Veterans or
surviving spouses who need additional monies to help care for ailing parents
or loved ones. This is a pension benefit and is not dependent upon
service-related injuries for compensation. Aid and Attendance can
help pay for care in the home, nursing home or assisted living facility.
For
more information, call the Veterans’ Administration.

Goldy's
Joke of the Month: |
A little
old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly,
painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered
a banana split.
The
waitress asked kindly, “Crushed nuts”? “No,” he replied, “arthritis”
| I hope to see you at
our next meeting on September16th. |
